A weak Wi-Fi signal and a shortage of network sockets are different problems. Buying the right device starts with identifying which one is affecting your home office, television or gaming setup.
Weak wireless coverage and range extenders
The Mercusys ME60X AX1500 Wi-Fi 6 range extender is designed to extend an existing wireless network. It supports range-extender and access-point modes and includes a Gigabit Ethernet port.
Placement matters. In extender mode, it needs a useful signal from the router to pass on. Putting it at the far edge of an existing dead spot may leave it with too little signal to work effectively. The setup guide and connection indicators can help identify a suitable position.
In access-point mode, a wired connection provides a different way to bring Wi-Fi to the area. The manual explains what each mode needs, including any cabling.
More wired ports with an Ethernet switch
The Nextech 8-port Gigabit Ethernet switch adds wired connections to a compatible router or local network. This can be useful when several devices near each other can use Ethernet, such as a computer, console and smart TV.
A switch does not provide Wi-Fi coverage by itself. One port is typically used for the connection back to the router, so account for that when planning how many devices you want to connect.
Will it make the internet faster?
Neither purchase changes your internet plan’s speed. A better local connection may help resolve a coverage or cabling bottleneck, but the modem, router, connected devices and internet service still set practical limits.
Wireless speed figures are theoretical link rates. Actual performance varies with walls, interference, distance and device compatibility. Gigabit Ethernet also requires compatible equipment and suitable cabling.
Why do I have full Wi-Fi bars but slow internet?
Your phone’s signal bars describe its connection to the extender. The extender still needs a good connection back to the router. Putting it in the room with the weakest signal can leave that link struggling, even when your phone shows a strong signal nearby.
The Mercusys extender needs a position where it still receives a good router signal. The floor, a corner or a spot behind obstacles can make that harder. A speed test near the router and another near the extender can reveal where performance drops: if both are slow, extending coverage may not address the cause. The Nextech Ethernet switch solves a different problem by providing more wired ports.
