When you’re packing for a trip, one bright light can seem like enough. But cooking dinner, finding something in the tent and walking around after dark are different jobs.
Rather than choosing every light by its maximum brightness, start with how you’ll use it. A lantern, torch and head torch each earn their place in different ways.
A lantern for a shared space
The Techlight Solar Camping Lantern with Retractable RGB String Lights combines a hanging white lantern with 10m of retractable RGB string lights.
It’s an option for lighting a shared area and adding colour around your setup. The retractable design keeps the string lights together when it’s time to pack.
This model offers solar and USB-C charging. Solar charging depends on the available sunlight, so charge before leaving and plan a suitable backup charging option rather than assuming a brief time outside will fully recharge it.
A head torch when both hands are busy
The Techlight 500 Lumen Rechargeable Head Torch has an adjustable strap and high, medium and low white-light settings. It also allows three AAA batteries as a backup, with those batteries purchased separately.
The quoted runtime is up to four hours, depending on mode and use. The charging cable or permitted backup batteries are worth making room for in your camping kit.
A handheld torch for a directed beam
The 1000 Lumen USB Rechargeable LED Torch has adjustable focus and high and low output settings.
A handheld torch lets you point the beam where you need it. A lower setting may be more comfortable for close work, while the higher setting can be useful when you need more light.
Brightness is only part of the story
Brightness is only part of the decision. Runtime at different settings, charging requirements, weight and mounting options all affect how useful the light will be. The manufacturer’s water-resistance guidance explains its limits around water.
