Battery chargers are designed for particular battery types and voltages. A charger that fits a terminal or holds a cell is not automatically suitable. The battery label and equipment’s charging instructions give the details needed to find a compatible charger.
Why battery chemistry matters
Lead-acid, Ni-MH and lithium batteries require different charging arrangements. Even within lithium batteries, LiFePO4 and other lithium-ion types are not interchangeable simply because their names sound similar.
The battery’s nominal voltage, capacity and chemistry are the key details. For rechargeable packs, the original charger specifications and manufacturer’s guidance are also useful. You should never attempt to recharge ordinary disposable cells.
For supported vehicle and larger batteries
The Powertech MB3926 intelligent battery charger supports specified 12V and 24V lead-acid batteries and has a mode for compatible 12.8V LiFePO4 batteries. It provides different charging outputs according to the selected mode.
The battery’s permitted charging current and the charger’s supported capacity range need to agree. You should always have the correct mode selected before charging; several available modes do not make the choice automatic.
For compatible rechargeable cells and packs
The universal rechargeable battery charger MB3639 in our Jaycar range supports specified Li-ion packs and rechargeable AA, AAA and 9V Ni-MH/Ni-Cd batteries. Its adjustable contacts serve compatible pack formats.
“Universal” describes a range of supported formats, not every battery ever made. Its instructions identify the supported voltage, chemistry, contact positions and battery configurations.
Charging conditions and accessories
The included leads and adaptors, a suitable charging location and a way to monitor the process are part of the setup. You should never charge or use a damaged, leaking or swollen battery. You should always follow the battery and charger instructions for connection, ventilation and charging conditions.
A battery-label photo can help
A clear photo of the battery label and the device model can help us identify a suitable option. It is much more useful than a description such as “the round battery” or “the charger with two clips”.
